CEO of Smartfit, Edgard Corona
Edgard Corona, the Chief Executive Officer of Smartfit, is a well-known name in Brazil’s gym industry. In addition, he is the head of the Bio Ritmo and Smartfit team, which has more than 480 gyms in operation. Edgard Corona founded Bio Ritmo in 1996 with one unit and no industry experience. Before he set up his gym, he was a professional chemical engineer who worked at his family’s sugar mill. With more than 1.6 million students, Smartfit is present in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico.
Edgard Corona introduced a “smart” way for people to exercise that changed the market. While in college, he opened up two stores, which he later sold and joined the family business. Later, he partnered with his friend to open up a gym. Although he did not have any experience in the fitness industry, he believed it was an excellent investment. Therefore, he decided to leave the family business and focus on growing the academy. Unfortunately, he got involved in a skiing accident and had to undergo physiotherapy every day. He decided to take up the physiotherapy sessions in his gym while he took care of the business. When his accident happened in 1996, the Brazilian economy was doing well. Therefore, despite their mistakes in design, the gym was still profitable. According to Edgard, it is impossible to pump in enough money into a business. When people start businesses, there are so many things that they overlook. However, a good entrepreneur makes mistakes and takes lessons from them.
